How to Install Mechanical Seals in Centrifugal Pumps

How Does a Mechanical Seal Work in A Pump?
A mechanical seal is used in centrifugal pumps to prevent liquid from damaging the delicate parts of the machine. It is situated on the motor shaft and serves as a check valve and slider bearing. Proper installation and regular maintenance are necessary to ensure there are no leaks in your system.
Steps for Replacing Mechanical Seals in Centrifugal Pumps
You may be wondering how long the mechanical seal installation procedure will take. By following the 10 simple steps listed below, you’ll have the job done in no time.
1. Cut the Power
The first step is to power off the centrifugal motor so that it is not in motion. Shut down the main power supply and double-check that there is no chance of the machine starting up again. Once this is done, it’s time to get to work!
2. Close the Suction and Discharge Isolation Valves and Drain the Pump
3. Disconnect the Centrifugal Pump
Locate the bolts holding the centrifugal pump housing in place and use a wrench to unscrew them. From the wet end, detach the pump motor located beyond the pump housing. Set these bolts aside for later.
4. Dismantle the Impeller
You’ll find a seal located behind the impeller on the pump shaft. For impellers screwed to the shaft, use a wrench to hold it in place and rotate the impeller in the opposite direction of standard rotation until it is completely unscrewed. For impellers bolted and keyed to the shaft, remove impeller bolt and shaft key.
5. Detach the Seal
The mechanical seal will be connected to the pump shaft. Slide off the seal pump shaft.
6. Replace the Seal
Now it’s time to place a new mechanical seal onto the shaft. Carefully slide the replacement seal along the pumpshaft.
CAUTION: Don’t touch the front face of the seal as it is susceptible to body oils and may not function properly if compromised. Keep the seal in its packaging until it’s time to install.
7. Screw on the Impeller
Use your wrench to hold the mechanical shaft in place while you screw the impeller onto the pump’s motor shaft or install the key and impeller bolt.
8. Reattach the Pump and Motor
Once the pump is fully assembled, reconnect the pump to the baseplate, attach the pump coupling hub, tighten casing bolts. If a spacer coupling is used, bump the motor to confirm correct rotation and install the spacer insert.
9. Energize the Motor
